Riuscita la missione del team di ricercatori dell’Istituto di Scienze Polari del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche e dell’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, che in collaborazione con il Centro di Ricerca Svizzero Paul Scherrer Institut ha lavorato per 5 giorni sul Monte Rosa a 4.500 metri di quota, per prelevare dal Colle Gnifetti due carote di ghiaccio superficiali e due carote profonde oltre 82 metri che saranno conservate in Antartide. Nel segmento più vicino alla roccia, il campione potrebbe contenere informazioni sul clima e l’ambiente fino a 10mila anni fa. Se le analisi lo confermeranno, significherebbe che in Antartide sarà conservato il ghiaccio più antico dell’arco alpino.
La missione è stata organizzata nell’ambito del programma internazionale Ice Memoryche ha l’obiettivo di creare in Antartide una ‘biblioteca’ dei ghiacci: un archivio di campioni provenienti dai ghiacciai attualmente in pericolo di ridursi o scomparire. Ice Memory fornirà per le decadi e i secoli a venire, archivi e dati sulla storia del clima e dell’ambiente fondamentali non solo per la scienza, ma anche per le politiche per la sostenibilità e il benessere dell’umanità.
Il team è partito martedì 1° giugno 2021 da Alagna Valsesia, in provincia di Vercelli, ai piedi del Rosa. I ricercatori si sono acclimatati per due notti al rifugio Capanna Gnifetti, a 3.600 metri di quota, per poi salire al Colle Gnifetti per il carotaggio profondo. Il rientro ad Alagna dopo 5 giorni, con i campioni da analizzare e preservare.
Per tutta la durata della missione, gli scienziati hanno alloggiato a Capanna Margherita, il rifugio più alto d’Europa, edificato su una vetta rocciosa 128 anni fa proprio per contribuire alla ricerca scientifica nel campo della fisiologia prima e poi anche nella climatologia e nelle scienze ambientali. Grazie al supporto dato al progetto da Rifugi Monterosa, Capanna Margherita è stata aperta appositamente per ospitare gli scienziati. Riaprirà dalla seconda metà di giugno per accogliere gli alpinisti.
Il ghiacciaio Gorner è il secondo ghiacciaio più esteso dell’arco alpino. Con un’area di circa 40 km2, si estende dai 2190 fino ai 4600 metri sul livello del mare. A fronte della sua estensione, nel 2017 è stato calcolato un volume di circa 4.9 chilometri cubi. Dalla metà dell’800, il ghiacciaio ha perso circa il 40% della sua area, a seguito di un ritiro della sua fronte pari a circa 3,3 chilometri.
La missione sul Monte Rosa è stata finanziata dal Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca (con il Fondo Integrativo Speciale per la Ricerca, Fisr) e dal Paul Scherrer Institut, ed è stata supportata da AKU e Karpos. Hanno collaborato il Comune di Alagna Valsesia, le Guide Alpine di Alagna, Rifugi Monterosa, Monterosa 2000 spa, Camp, AVIS, ARPA Piemonte, ARPA Valle d’Aosta, Comitato Glaciologico Italiano, Ente di gestione delle aree protette della Valle Sesia, Fondazione Montagna Sicura, Università di Torino, Einwohnergemeinde Zermatt, Sektion Naturgefahren Kanton Wallis.

Per Ice Memory, quella sul Monte Rosa è la terza missione sui ghiacciai alpini dopo quella del 2016 sul Monte Bianco e del 2020 sul Grand Combin. Altre spedizioni internazionali hanno permesso di mettere al sicuro gli archivi dei ghiacciai Illimani (Bolivia), Belukha e Elbrus (Russia).
Ice Memory è un programma congiunto tra Università Grenoble Alpes, Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Istituto nazionale francese per le ricerche sullo sviluppo sostenibile (Ird), Cnrs, Cnr, e con Istituto polare francese (Ipev) e Programma nazionale per le ricerche in Antartide (Pnra) per quanto riguarda le attività alla stazione Concordia in Antartide. Ice Memory ha il patrocinio delle commissioni italiana e francese dell’Unesco.
