Roma, 10 febbraio 2022 – Con la partenza dell’ultimo gruppo di spedizionieri estivi e il passaggio di consegne tra Rocco Ascione, station leader uscente, e Massimiliano Catricalà station leader del Winterover DC18, presso la stazione italo-francese Concordia inizia ufficialmente la 18a campagna invernale del Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA).
13 persone tra tecnici e ricercatori, 6 italiani del PNRA, 6 francesi dell’Istituto polare Paul Emile Victor (IPEV) e 1 medico svedese dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA), resteranno in completo isolamento per nove lunghi mesi, a 3200 metri di altitudine e 1200 chilometri dalla costa. Durante tutto l’inverno polare, infatti, la stazione non sarà raggiungibile a causa delle temperature esterne proibitive, che possono scendere fino a toccare i -80°C. I winterover porteranno avanti le attività di ricerca su clima e biomedicina, e garantiranno la manutenzione ella stazione e degli impianti fino a quando il prossimo novembre, all’inizio della prossima campagna estiva, un nuovo gruppo arriverà per sostituirli.
La 37a campagna estiva 2021-2022 è iniziata a Concordia il 2 novembre. In questi tre mesi si sono avvicendate oltre 90 persone, che hanno lavorato a pieno ritmo per garantire il proseguimento dei 30 progetti di ricerca in corso e la manutenzione e rifornimento della stazione.
Quest’anno, sono state particolarmente intense le attività dedicate ai corsi antincendio e di gestione del rischio indoor e outdoor necessari a completare la formazione del nuovo gruppo degli invernanti, in quanto le norme anti-covid hanno ridotto al minimo le attività svolte di solito in Italia prima della partenza.
Tra le attività di spicco di questa 37a campagna estiva a Concordia va citato l’allestimento del campo remoto a Little Dome C, a 35 km dalla stazione, dove si svolgerà la campagna di carotaggio del ghiaccio per il progetto Beyond Epica Oldest Ice, che andrà alla ricerca del ghiaccio più antico della Terra, prelevato fino a una profondità di circa 2730 metri, per ricostruire le variazioni del clima degli ultimi 1,5 milioni di anni.
Mentre a Concordia inizia la campagna invernale, sulla costa, a Baia Terra Nova, la stazione Mario Zucchelli chiude e per la prima volta le attività di ricerca proseguiranno fino a fine marzo a bordo della nave rompighiaccio Laura Bassi, impegnata a completare la campagna oceanografica nel mare di Ross.
La nave Laura Bassi, di proprietà dell’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), unica imbarcazione italiana in grado di operare in mari polari, è attualmente in viaggio verso il porto di Littletown, in Nuova Zelanda per le operazioni di scarico. Riprenderà il largo intorno al 20 febbraio per la terza e ultima rotazione in Antartide. Avrà a bordo 21 persone, tra tecnici e ricercatori, che svolgeranno nel mare di Ross attività di ricerca dedicata prevalentemente alla geofisica. Farà rientro in Italia a inizio maggio 2022, dopo circa 45 giorni di navigazione.
Il Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide è finanziato dal Ministero dell’Università e Ricerca ed è attuato dall’ENEA per la pianificazione e l’organizzazione logistica delle spedizioni, e dal CNR per la programmazione e coordinamento delle attività scientifiche.
