Antartide: a MZS ghiaccio troppo sottile per l’ atterraggio
Tra le varie attività che il gruppo di apertura deve approntare, oltre al riavvio degli impianti della stazione, vi è la predisposizione della pista sul pack marino, per consentire l’atterraggio del C130J della 46ma Brigata Aerea della nostra Aeronautica Militare.
Purtroppo le misure eseguite nell’area di ghiaccio marino (fast-ice) sede delle operazioni di atterraggio hanno confermato i timori derivati dalle preliminari analisi delle immagini satellitari che evidenziavano, nell’intera area del Mare di Ross condizioni non usuali.
Già nel tardo Febbraio 2022 i dati satellitari mostravano, in forte controtendenza rispetto alle misurazioni iniziate alla fine degli anni ’70 sull’intero continente antartico, una forte riduzione di estensione nella copertura di ghiaccio marino (1,92×106 Km2, con una diminuzione rispetto alla media a lungo termine di circa 0,92 x106 Km2) di cui il sistema Mare di Ross contribuiva per il 46%.
Nel dettaglio, il ghiaccio marino nell’area antistante la Stazione mostra spessori dell’ordine del metro (1,0:–1,2 m rispetto agli usuali 2,0 m) ed il mare libero è oramai presente con una profonda insenatura all’interno del Gerlache Inlet arrivando, nell’area della Stazione di ricerca sino a Punta Stocchino. Sono state effettuate verifiche tenendo in considerazione i diversi tracciati realizzati nel corso delle diverse spedizioni (Figura1). Nel corso della 38° Spedizione del PNRA non sarà pertanto possibile effettuare collegamenti intercontinentali atterrando sulla ice-runway.

Stiamo prendendo accordi con il Programma Antartico Americano con cui abbiamo ottimi rapporti di collaborazione, per valutare tutte le opzioni possibili, deviando sulla base americana di McMurdo situata a 350 km circa da MZS, parte delle operazioni aeree necessarie a trasportare il personale scientifico-logistico ed il cargo necessario” – ci dice Elena Campana, responsabile dell’Unità Tecnica Antartide dell’ENEA. Inoltre unitamente ai tecnici della nostra Aeronautica Militare, valuteremo la possibilità di poter utilizzare la pista di atterraggio in ghiaia di Boulder Clay, in fase di completamento delle lavorazioni”
“I voli intercontinentali provenienti da Christchurch (NZ) e operati con il C130-30J della 46° Brigata Aerea dell’Aeronautica Militare Italiana, saranno necessariamente rimodulati verso la stazione americana di McMurdo. Personale e materiali saranno da lì trasferiti presso la stazione Mario Zucchelli a bordo del Basler BT-67 a nostra disposizione” – ci racconta il capo spedizione, Gianluca Bianchi Fasani (ENEA-UTA). – “Al momento abbiamo in corso uno scambio di servizi con il Programma Americano mettendo a loro disposizione il nostro Hercules per il trasporto cargo e ricevendo in cambio sui loro vettori passaggi per il personale. Ovviamente questo si traduce in un significativo incremento dello sforzo logistico. Cercheremo comunque di garantire il corretto svolgimento delle progettualità programmate”.
Abbiamo chiesto a Paolo Grigioni, responsabile dell’Osservatorio Meteorologico del PNRA presso la stazione Mario Zucchelli, la cui rete di stazioni è illustrata in Figura 2, di spiegarci quali sono le possibili cause dello scarso spessore riscontrato del giaccio marino, evento mai registrato finora.

“Tra gennaio e settembre 2022 la stazione meteorologica Eneide installata nei pressi della stazione Mario Zucchelli ha registrato diversi episodi prolungati nel tempo di vento forte attorno ai 40 nodi. – ci spiega Paolo Grigioni- e anche numerosi picchi oltre i 100 nodi.
