Con l’arrivo a Concordia del primo gruppo di tecnici estivi, il 3 novembre 2022 è iniziata anche a Concordia la campagna estiva. All’arrivo la stazione è stata trovata in ottime condizioni grazie al gran lavoro svolto dalla squadra del diciottesimo Winterover (DC18). Con l’arrivo del personale estivo finisce anche il loro lungo isolamento, durato 9 mesi, e la squadra DC18 si appresta così a tornare a casa, dopo il passaggio di consegne con la nuova squadra di invernanti in arrivo.
Da novembre a febbraio, molti ricercatori e tecnici troveranno alloggio e supporto tecnico logistico presso la stazione Concordia. Quest’anno si avvicenderanno oltre 80 persone che porteranno avanti le attività di ben 30 progetti di ricerca inerenti l’astronomia, le scienze della Terra, la fisica e la chimica dell’atmosfera e la climatologia, ma anche la medicina. Sono 17 i progetti di ricerca italiani afferenti al PNRA, 11 progetti di ricerca francesi in carico all’IPEV e 2 sono i progetti condivisi. In aggiunta la squadra invernante parteciperà a ben 9 progetti di biomedicina in collaborazione con l’ ESA. Il sistema Concordia darà supporto anche al campo remoto di Little Dome C, a circa 35km dalla Stazione Concordia, dove è in corso il progetto europeo Beyond Epica, il più grande studio sui cambiamenti climatici, che mira ad estrarre dalla calotta glaciale antartica il nucleo di ghiaccio più antico della Terra prelevato a una profondità di circa 3000 metri, per studiarlo e ricavarne preziose informazioni sul clima terrestre risalente a oltre 1,5 milioni di anni fa.
I tecnici del PNRA e dell’IPEV presenti a Concordia saranno impegnati su diversi fronti. Oltre a supportare i ricercatori nei diversi progetti di ricerca in corso, porteranno avanti le attività di gestione e manutenzione della stazione ed eseguiranno le operazioni di carico e scarico sia dei voli continentali che trasportano personale, cibo e strumentazione scientifica all’interno del continente, sia delle traverse, i lunghi convogli trainati da slitte che trasportano combustibile e materiali pesanti dalla costa, da Cape Prud’Homme alla stazione Concordia.
La nuova squadra di invernanti DC19 è composta da 6 italiani del PNRA, 6 francesi dell’Istituto polare francese Paul Emile Victor (IPEV) e 1 medico tedesco dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA). Sostituiranno la squadra DC18 dopo un periodo di affiancamento necessario a garantire il passaggio di consegne e a completare la formazione antincendio e di gestione del rischio outdoor.
Dal prossimo febbraio 2023, dopo la partenza degli ultimi partecipanti della campagna estiva, la squadra dei 13 DC19 inizierà l’isolamento invernale che durerà nove mesi, poiché la stazione diventerà irraggiungibile a causa delle temperature esterne proibitive, che possono scendere fino a raggiungere i -80°C. Porteranno avanti le attività di ricerca e manutenzione fino a quando a novembre del prossimo anno un nuovo gruppo arriverà per l’apertura estiva.
