Al via in modalità “Covid free” la 37a spedizione italiana in Antartide
Dopo aver superato i rigidi controlli sanitari anti Covid-19 e trascorso una quarantena di 14 giorni in una stanza di albergo a Christchurch, il gruppo di apertura, composto da 23 persone, è arrivato il 20 ottobre presso la stazione Mario Zucchelli dando l’avvio alla 37a spedizione italiana in Antartide.
Atterrati con un volo del Programma Antartico degli Stati Uniti d’America (USAP), i tecnici del PNRA hanno l’impegnativo compito di riattivare tutti i servizi della stazione e preparare la pista di 3 km sul pack marino, necessaria ad assicurare l’atterraggio dei successivi voli intercontinentali.
Sono infatti in programma 9 voli intercontinentali operati con il C-130J della 46^ Brigata Aerea dell’Aeronautica Militare Italiana (AMI), ed un volo operato con l’Airbus-A319 dell’Australian Antarctic Division. Garantiranno il trasporto di passeggeri e materiali e i collegamenti tra Christchurch (Nuova Zelanda), la base italiana MZS e quella statunitense di McMurdo.
A differenza della spedizione 2020-2021, che è stata organizzata con un ridotto numero di partecipanti e di attività per far fronte all’emergenza sanitaria, quella di quest’anno vedrà riprese a pieno ritmo sia le attività scientifiche, sia quelle logistiche. Saranno infatti oltre 50 i progetti di ricerca portati avanti e 220 i partecipanti, tra tecnici e ricercatori, guidati dal capo spedizione Gianluca Bianchi Fasani dell’ENEA, che a novembre passerà il testimone ad Alberto della Rovere, sempre dell’ENEA.
Tra i partecipanti alla spedizione vi saranno anche 18 esperti militari di Esercito, Marina, Aeronautica, Arma dei Carabinieri e Vigili del fuoco, che, nell’ambito delle specifiche competenze, daranno supporto al PNRA, per le attività esterne e i campi remoti, per le attività navali e subacquee, per le previsioni meteorologiche e per la pianificazione e svolgimento in sicurezza delle operazioni di elicotteri e aeromobili. Anche quest’anno prenderà parte alla spedizione la nave rompighiaccio da ricerca oceanografica Laura Bassi.
Per garantire la sicurezza sanitaria in un ambiente estremo e con capacità sanitarie limitate come è l’Antartide, anche quest’anno sarà applicato a tutto il personale in missione lo stringente protocollo sanitario messo a punto lo scorso anno dal Consiglio dei direttori dei programmi nazionali antartici (COMNAP). Infatti, oltre ad essere invitati a completare il ciclo di vaccinazione COVID-19 e a vaccinarsi contro l’influenza stagionale e il pneumococco, tutti i partecipanti sono stati sottoposti a rigorosi controlli sanitari sia prima della partenza dall’Italia, sia all’arrivo nei i gateway antartici australiano e neozelandese. Ci si aspetta che nel personale vaccinato i sintomi della possibile malattia non siano troppo gravi e curabili in loco. In caso di sintomi gravi che richiedano assistenza respiratoria, su consiglio dei medici di spedizione, il Capo Spedizione potrà decidere di attivare un MedEvac (Aero Medical Evacuation).
