1 dicembre 2023 – Antarctica Day: anche un’occasione per ricordare la figura di Mario Zucchelli a 20 anni dalla scomparsa.
Il 1° dicembre di ogni anno è l’“Antarctica Day” (1), il giorno dedicato a ricordare la firma e lo spirito del Trattato Antartico. Un esempio di cooperazione internazionale che ha consacrato l’Antartide ad usi pacifici, alla ricerca scientifica e alla collaborazione internazionale.
Siglato a Washington il 1° dicembre 1959 da 12 paesi, il Trattato Antartico conta oggi 54 Nazioni firmatarie. Con la sua entrata in vigore sono state sospese tutte le rivendicazioni territoriali sull’Antartide e vietata ogni attività militare, nucleare e di sfruttamento delle risorse sul suo territorio.
L’Italia ha sottoscritto il Trattato nel 1981, e dal 1985 è presente in Antartide con un programma scientifico governativo, il Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide, finanziato dal Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca. Nell’ambito del PNRA, l’Italia ha costruito due stazioni scientifiche, la Stazione Mario Zucchelli e la stazione italo-francese Concordia e dispone della nave rompighiaccio da ricerca oceanografica “Laura Bassi”. Il PNRA contribuisce alla conoscenza e allo studio del continente Antartico finanziando progetti che vedono scienziati italiani impegnati in ricerche internazionali su settori strategici quali glaciologia, fisica dell’atmosfera, geologia, geofisica, oceanografia, astrofisica, biologia, medicina e sviluppo tecnologico.
In questo giorno speciale, 1 dicembre 2023, vogliamo cogliere l’occasione per commemorare la figura dell’ingegnere Mario Zucchelli (Crevalcore, 1944-2003) a 20 anni dalla scomparsa. Protagonista e figura portante della ricerca italiana in Antartide, Mario Zucchelli, dirigente ENEA, è stato alla guida del “Progetto Antartide” dal 1987 alla sua prematura scomparsa avvenuta il 2003.
Manager di indiscusse qualità tecniche e umane, ha grandemente contribuito a portare il programma antartico italiano ad un alto livello nel panorama internazionale. Per citarne alcuni suoi successi: si deve a lui l’inizio della collaborazione con l’Istituto Polare Francese che ha portato alla realizzazione della stazione Concordia e all’avvio del più grande studio sui cambiamenti climatici, iniziato con il progetto EPICA e ancor oggi in corso con il progetto Beyond EPICA – Oldest Ice, che mira ad estrarre dalla calotta glaciale antartica i più antichi campioni di ghiaccio finora mai ottenuti. E’ sotto la sua guida che la stazione Baia Terra Nova, rinominata Mario Zucchelli in suo onore, è stata ampliata e dotata di facilities che hanno permesso ai ricercatori di lavorare nel panorama scientifico internazionale. Ed è grazie alla sua iniziativa che sono stati avviati i collegamenti aerei tra Christchurch (NZ) e le stazioni Mario Zucchelli e Concordia.
Per illuminare la sua figura, riportiamo un articolo pubblicato dalla “Rassegna storica crevalcorese” nel 2018. E’ stato scritto da Roberto Cervellati, suo stretto collaboratore in Antartide e in Italia, in ricordo dell’amico e collega scomparso prematuramente all’età di 59 anni.
Roberto Cervellati è un fisico ENEA che ha svolto per il “Progetto Antartide” il ruolo di coordinatore scientifico, venendo a costituire il punto di incontro tra le esigenze della scienza e le possibilità della logistica. Cervellati ha partecipato a 7 spedizioni del PNRA alcune volte con il ruolo di Capo Spedizione, lavorando sempre a fianco di Mario Zucchelli.
