Con l’arrivo a Concordia del primo gruppo di tecnici estivi, il 2 novembre 2021 è iniziata ufficialmente la campagna estiva sul plateau antartico. Con il loro arrivo finisce anche il lungo isolamento, durato 9 mesi, della squadra del diciassettesimo Winterover, che si prepara così a tornare a casa.
La stazione Concordia è un punto di riferimento per la comunità scientifica internazionale impegnata nelle tante attività di ricerca che si svolgono a Dome C, e durante la campagna estiva vi trovano alloggio, supporto tecnico e logistico molti ricercatori e tecnici. Quest’anno si avvicenderanno oltre 90 persone che porteranno avanti le attività di ben 39 progetti di ricerca inerenti l’astronomia, l’astrofisica, la sismologia, la fisica dell’atmosfera e la climatologia, ma anche la biologia e la medicina. Sono 19 progetti di ricerca italiani afferenti al PNRA, 14 progetti di ricerca francesi in carico all’IPEV, 6 progetti di biomedicina ed il progetto europeo Beyond Epica, il più grande studio sui cambiamenti climatici, che mira ad estrarre dalla calotta glaciale antartica, presso il sito di Little Dome C, a circa 35km dalla Stazione Concordia, il nucleo di ghiaccio più antico della Terra, prelevato a una profondità di circa 3000 metri, per studiarlo e ricavarne preziose informazioni sul clima terrestre risalente a oltre 1,5 milioni di anni fa. Per questo progetto il sistema Concordia darà supporto a ulteriori 11 spedizionieri presso il campo remoto di Little Dome C .
Oltre a fornire supporto tecnico e logistico alle varie attività di ricerca, i tecnici del PNRA e dell’IPEV presenti a Concordia dovranno portare avanti le attività di manutenzione della stazione e fornire supporto nelle operazioni di carico e scarico sia dei voli continentali che trasportano personale, cibo e strumentazione scientifica all’interno del continente, sia delle traverse, i lunghi convogli trainati da slitte che trasportano combustibile e materiali pesanti dalla costa, presso Cape Prud’Homme, alla stazione Concordia.
La nuova squadra di invernanti DC18 è invece arrivata il 7 novembre. Sono i 6 italiani del PNRA, 6 francesi dell’Istituto polare francese Paul Emile Victor (IPEV) e 1 medico svedese dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA), che sostituiranno la squadra DC17 dopo un periodo di affiancamento, necessario a garantire il passaggio di consegne e a completare la formazione antincendio e di gestione del rischio outdoor.
Dal prossimo febbraio 2022, dopo la partenza degli ultimi partecipanti della campagna estiva, la squadra dei 13 DC18 inizierà il suo lungo isolamento invernale che durerà nove lunghi mesi, poiché la stazione diventa irraggiungibile a causa delle temperature esterne proibitive che possono scendere fino a raggiungere i -80°C.
