E’ on-line il report della XXXVI spedizione italiana in Antartide, organizzata dal PNRA nell’estate australe 2020-2021 in modalità “emergenza”, per far fronte alle limitazioni imposte dalla pandemia da Covid-19.
Come gli altri Programmi Antartici, anche il PRNA ha dovuto rimodulare il programma delle attività da svolgere, riducendo il numero dei partecipanti al 30% del personale abitualmente coinvolto, e di conseguenza anche le attività scientifiche e logistiche da portare avanti.
Nonostante le inevitabili difficoltà, la spedizione ha comunque raggiunto gli obiettivi prefissati, e nel report, destinato anche ad un lettore non esperto, sono riassunte sia le principali attività logistiche svolte per manutenere e mantenere operative le stazioni, sia quelle scientifiche ritenute indifferibili per garantire il proseguimento delle attività di ricerca in corso.
Presso la Stazione Mario Zucchelli sono stati completati i lavori di ammodernamento dei laboratori e della zona giorno, mensa e bar, ed è stata eseguita la manutenzione dell’impianto di riscaldamento e di quello ICT. Questa 36° campagna sarà ricordata anche per l’entrata in funzione del nuovo acquario, la cui realizzazione era in corso da diversi anni.
La nave rompighiaccio “Laura Bassi” ha effettuato una breve campagna oceanografica nel mare di Ross per manutenere la strumentazione dell’osservatorio marino, e ha dato un fondamentale supporto alla logistica trasportando materiali, carburante e, soprattutto, il personale in uscita dalla stazione Mario Zucchelli a fine Spedizione.
Presso la stazione Concordia, la campagna estiva è stata dedicata principalmente alla manutenzione della stazione e della strumentazione, e all’approvvigionamento di combustibile e viveri in preparazione della campagna invernale. Si è svolto regolarmente anche l’avvicendamento e passaggio di consegne tra il precedente gruppo dei winterover, il personale rimasto presso la stazione per un anno, e il nuovo, che vi rimarrà fino al prossimo novembre.

Il report si conclude con una panoramica delle attività di divulgazione rivolte ai diversi target, cittadini e studenti, ma anche docenti, giornalisti e decision maker, realizzate durante l’anno, per far conoscere il PNRA e l’impegno dell’Italia in Antartide, e raccontare l’importante contributo che il continente antartico dà alla scienza per la comprensione globale del pianeta.
