Il contrasto ai cambiamenti climatici parte anche dall’Antartide e lo studio del continente polare può dare risposte alla sfida ambientale globale. La ricerca scientifica in Antartide e l’analisi del ghiaccio, come strumenti di comprensione delle evoluzioni climatiche, sono state al centro della conferenza stampa che si è tenuta oggi al Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca, e a cui hanno partecipato il Ministro Lorenzo Fioramonti e il Sottosegretario Giuseppe De Cristofaro. L’occasione è il 60esimo anniversario del Trattato Antartico che ricorre il primo dicembre.
“Il lavoro degli scienziati italiani in Antartide è una grande eccellenza e rappresenta una importante collaborazione interistituzionale e interdisciplinare – ha detto il Ministro Fioramonti –. La ricerca legata alla sostenibilità ambientale è fondamentale per la preservazione degli ecosistemi del nostro Pianeta. Ecco perché dobbiamo fare in modo che la ricerca venga considerata un grande volano di sviluppo per il Paese e sia messa al centro della programmazione economica”.
A 60 anni dalla firma del Trattato Antartico e a 34 anni dall’avvio del Programma Nazionale di Ricerca in Antartide (PNRA), la ricerca scientifica italiana nel continente antartico può contare su 87 progetti di ricerca attivi, 23 milioni di euro di finanziamenti annuali, due stazioni scientifiche e una nave rompighiaccio. La spedizione scientifica in corso per il 2019-2020 è la 35esima dell’Italia.
“La sfida è quella di scoprire sempre più un continente che ha un ruolo essenziale nella questione ambientale globale – ha dichiarato il Sottosegretario al MIUR, De Cristofaro – .
