Le attività legate alla XXXVI spedizione in Antartide continuano in Italia anche dopo il ritorno a casa degli spedizionieri impegnati nella campagna estiva. Sono quelle connesse alla logistica del trasferimento del materiale arrivato in Italia sulla nave rompighiaccio Laura Bassi, di ritorno dalla campagna antartica.
La nave, di proprietà di OGS dal 2019, è l’unica nave italiana certificata per navigare nei mari polari a disposizione della comunità scientifica. E’ una nave da ricerca dotata di due laboratori scientifici, che consente anche il trasporto di materiali e persone, disponendo di due gru per il carico e scarico del materiale e di un ponte di volo per elicotteri.
Quella 2020-2021 è stata la seconda missione in Antartide della Laura Bassi. Nonostante le limitazioni imposte dalla pandemia da Covid-19, la sua disponibilità ha permesso di rifornire di materiale la stazione Mario Zucchelli, di condurre una campagna oceanografica nel mare di Ross e di riportare in Italia 22 container e altro materiale proveniente dall’Antartide.
Partita il 2 febbraio dall’Antartide con a bordo il gruppo di tecnici e ricercatori che hanno chiuso la stazione Mario Zucchelli, la nave ha fatto tappa in Nuova Zelanda e, una volta sbarcato il personale e riconfigurato il cargo, ha ripreso il viaggio verso l’Italia, arrivando nel porto di Ravenna il 29 marzo.
Ad attenderla Giuseppe Antonelli, Giuseppe Fantauzzi e Valerio Severi, il personale dell’ENEA che ha seguito le operazioni di scarico del materiale, il suo stoccaggio provvisorio nei locali gestiti dal CNR presso il porto San Vitale di Ravenna, le annesse incombenze doganali, ed ha assicurato la sua corretta spedizione nei luoghi di destinazione.
Sono rientrate in Italia alcune apparecchiature scientifiche, desinate al Centro Ricerche ENEA Casaccia per essere controllate, manutenute e stoccate in attesa di ritornare in Antartide con la prossima spedizione. La Laura Bassi ha trasportato anche i campioni prelevati in Antartide, che per la prima volta sono un numero veramente contenuto, a causa delle ridotte attività scientifiche svolte durante questa spedizione, organizzata in modalità ”emergenza” per far fronte alla pandemia. I campioni, costituiti soprattutto da ghiaccio e acqua, conservati a temperatura controllata, sono attesi nei laboratori del Politecnico delle Marche di Ancona, del CNR di Bologna e dell’ENEA Casaccia, dove saranno analizzati per fornire importati dati e spunti di riflessione per le tante attività di ricerca in corso.
Come previsto dal Trattato Antartico e dal Protocollo sulla protezione ambientale, sono anche rientrati in Italia i rifiuti prodotti nel corso delle ultime 4 campagne antartiche per un totale di 9 container. Tutti i rifiuti sono stati prodotti, raccolti e stoccati in modo differenziato nella Stazione Italiana Mario Zucchelli. Una volta scaricati, sono stati avviati allo smaltimento come previsto dalle normative vigenti.
Appena sbarcato il materiale proveniente dall’Antartide, la nave Laura Bassi è subito ripartita con destinazione l’Arsenale di Fincantieri a Trieste, dove sarà equipaggiata di nuova strumentazione per lo studio e l’esplorazione dell’intero ecosistema marino. Saranno, infatti, installati due nuovi sistemi di mappatura tridimensionale del fondale marino, nuovi ecoscandagli in grado di “mappare” banchi di pesce a grandi profondità e sistemi innovativi per “osservare” la Terra a più di 3.000 metri di profondità, oltre a nuovi sistemi di campionamento e carotaggio del fondo marino e a strumenti che misurano le correnti in profondità mentre la nave è in navigazione.
