Altra tappa della spedizione italiana in Antartide 2021-2022. E’ stata chiusa la stazione Mario Zucchelli. Dopo aver messo in sicurezza gli edifici e gli impianti, l’ultimo gruppo di tecnici ha lasciato Baia Terra Nova con un volo diretto alla stazione americana McMurdo, dove attenderanno il volo intercontinentale che li porterà prima in Nuova Zelanda e poi in Italia.
Ma le attività della 37° spedizione italiana in Antartide organizzata dal PNRA continuano. Presso la stazione Concordia è appena iniziata la campagna invernale, il winterover DC18, e quest’anno per la prima volta la campagna oceanografica nel mare di Ross della nave rompighiaccio Laura Bassi proseguirà fino a fine marzo.
Nonostante le limitazioni imposte dalla pandemia da SARS-COV2, la 37° spedizione italiana in Antartide è stata una campagna quasi regolare sia per il numero di persone coinvolte, che per le attività logistiche e scientifiche svolte. Hanno partecipato alla spedizione 220 tra ricercatori e tecnici, tra cui 18 esperti militari di Esercito, Marina, Aeronautica, Arma dei Carabinieri e Vigili del fuoco, e sono state svolte attività per oltre 50 progetti di ricerca su temi quali le scienze della vita, della terra, dell’atmosfera e dello spazio.
Tutti i partecipanti alla spedizione estiva sono stati scelti rigorosamente tra il personale veterano, con anni di esperienza, poiché, a causa della pandemia, i consueti corsi di formazione al personale neofita non si sono potuti organizzare. Unica eccezione è stata fatta per il personale che trascorrerà l’inverno australe a Concordia, che ha completato la formazione antincendio e di gestione del rischio outdoor all’arrivo nella stazione.
Grazie al rispetto dello stringente protocollo sanitario, messo a punto lo scorso anno dal Consiglio dei direttori dei programmi nazionali antartici (COMNAP) e applicato a tutto il personale in partenza per l’Antartide e a tutto il personale in transitato nelle stazioni, l’Italia è stata tra le nazioni riuscite a realizzare una campagna antartica in modalità Covid-free.
La stazione Mario Zucchelli è stata aperta da un primo gruppo di tecnici arrivati il 20 ottobre 2021 con un volo del Programma Antartico degli Stati Uniti d’America (USAP). Hanno avuto l’impegnativo compito di riattivare tutti i servizi della stazione e preparare la pista di 3 km sul pack marino, per consentire l’atterraggio degli aerei che hanno operato i trasferimenti successivi.
Il trasporto del personale e dei materiali tra Christchurch (Nuova Zelanda) e la base italiana Mario Zucchelli è stato realizzato con 9 voli intercontinentali operati con il C-130J della 46^ Brigata Aerea dell’Aeronautica Militare Italiana (AMI) e uno con l’Airbus-A319 dell’Australian Antarctic Division. Anche la nave Laura Bassi, durante due delle tre rotazioni programmate tra la Nuova Zelanda e la stazione Mario Zucchelli, è stata impiegata per trasferire il personale e il materiale in arrivo e in partenza dall’Antartide.
Anche se l’inizio della campagna scientifica è slittata di oltre una settimana, a causa delle avverse condizioni metereologiche che hanno ritardato la partenza del volo dalla Nuova Zelanda, tutte le attività programmate sono state svolte regolarmente, grazie anche alla proficua sinergia che si è instaurata tra gli operatori logistici e i ricercatori.
Nella stazione sono proseguiti i lavori di ampliamento della zona giorno e quelli di completamento e messa in funzione del nuovo acquario. Le operazioni di manutenzione degli impianti e dei mezzi di trasporto in dotazione hanno permesso al personale in missione di soggiornare e lavorare in sicurezza.
