Anche in Antartide è arrivato il vaccino anti Covid-19
Prima di lasciare l’Antartide e affrontare il viaggio di rientro a casa, tutto il personale italo-francese che ha trascorso un intero lungo anno presso la stazione Concordia, i 12 winter over DC17, ha fatto le due dosi di vaccino anti Covid-19.
Le dosi di vaccino Pfizer sono arrivate a Concordia il 2 novembre 2021, portate dal primo gruppo di tecnici che ha dato il via alla campagna estiva 2021-2022 e segnato la fine di quella invernale.
Dopo un anno di permanenza in Antartide, lo stress causato dalle estreme condizioni di lavoro e vita ha ridotto, se pur temporaneamente, la risposta immunitaria di tutti gli invernanti, e per ridurre il rischio di complicanze conseguenti a un possibile contagio da Covid-19 durante il viaggio di rientro, è stato attivato un protocollo di vaccinazione, che ha affiancato quello previsto per tutto il personale in arrivo in Antartide.
Infatti, tutto il personale che partecipa alla 37a spedizione italiana in Antartide organizzata dal PNRA è stato sottoposto allo stringente protocollo sanitario messo a punto lo scorso anno dal Consiglio dei manager dei programmi nazionali antartici (COMNAP) per evitare la diffusione della pandemia sul continente. Tutti sono stati invitati a completare il ciclo di vaccinazione COVID-19 e a vaccinarsi contro l’influenza stagionale e il pneumococco prima della partenza. Tutti sono stati sottoposti a rigorosi controlli sanitari sia prima della partenza dall’Italia, sia all’arrivo nei i gateway antartici australiano e neozelandese. Tutti hanno trascorso una rigida quarantena di almeno 14 giorni in isolamento, confinati in una stanza di albergo fino al trasferimento in Antartide e sottoposti a 4 tamponi molecolari.
La squadra dei 12 winter over DC17 uscenti, essendo arrivata a Concordia a novembre 2020, non aveva fatto il vaccino anti Covid-19 in quanto all’epoca non era ancora disponibile. Per loro è stato attivato un protocollo di vaccinazione da seguire prima di lasciare l’Antartide.
Grazie a un accordo con l’hub vaccinale presente ad Hobart in Australia, i colleghi dell’Istituto Polare Francese, con cui gestiamo insieme la stazione, hanno acquistato le dosi di vaccino Pfizer, che appena arrivato a Concordia è tato somministrato a tutti i 12 invernanti. Nei giorni successivi all’inoculazione, i vaccinati sono stati sottoposti a sorveglianza medica per controllarne i possibili effetti collaterali. In nessuno è stata registrata una reazione avversa importante, soltanto alcuni hanno lamentato fastidio al braccio. Naturalmente, la data fissata per la partenza dall’Antartide ha garantito l’intervallo di tempo necessario a fare anche la seconda dose prima dell’inizio del viaggio di ritorno. I 12 winter over hanno lasciato la stazione Concordia in tempi diversi, alcuni per far rientro a casa a bordo della nave rompighiaccio francese Astrolabe, ed altri con volo intercontinentale. Tutti saranno a casa entro la prima settimana di dicembre.
