Il Pnra-Programma nazionale di ricerche in Antartide, attuato da Enea per gli aspetti logistici e dal Cnr per il coordinamento scientifico, chiude la 33a spedizione estiva e apre la 14a campagna invernale. L’ultimo contingente ha lasciato la base italiana Mario Zucchelli a Baia Terra Nova, mentre nella stazione italo-francese di Concordia 13 invernanti rimarranno in completo isolamento nei prossimi otto mesi per condurre studi di glaciologia, chimica e fisica dell’atmosfera, astrofisica, astronomia, geofisica e biomedicina
Con più di 50 progetti scientifici portati a termine si conclude la 33a Campagna estiva del Programma nazionale di ricerche in Antartide (Pnra), finanziata dal Ministero dell’istruzione, dell’università e della ricerca (Miur), attuata dall’Enea per gli aspetti logistici e dal Cnr per la programmazione e il coordinamento scientifico, che ha visto la partecipazione di 210 tra ricercatori e tecnici provenienti da istituzioni di ricerca di tutta Italia. Dopo un rinvio a causa del maltempo, gli ultimi 12 partecipanti alla missione, hanno lasciato la base italiana Mario Zucchelli nella Baia di Terra Nova, che per questa stagione chiude i battenti.
“Pessime condizioni meteo ci hanno visto costretti a ritardare di qualche giorno la preventivata chiusura della base; in particolare forti raffiche di vento impedivano il decollo dei velivoli verso la base antartica permanente statunitense McMurdo, da dove il nostro viaggio è proseguito per la Nuova Zelanda prima di fare rientro in Italia”, sottolinea il capo spedizione Alberto della Rovere dell’Enea.
Con la chiusura ‘stagionale’ della base italiana non si concludono però le attività di ricerca scientifica del nostro paese in Antartide, che proseguono infatti presso la Stazione italo-francese di Concordia (Dome C), la base di ricerca permanente situata nel plateau antartico a 3.300 m di altitudine dove ha preso il via la 14a Campagna invernale.
“Per i prossimi otto mesi 13 invernanti (in gergo tecnico winterover), sei italiani e un francese in forza al Pnra, cinque francesi dell’Ipev (Istituto polare francese Paul Emile Victor) e un medico austriaco dell’Esa (Agenzia spaziale europea), rimarranno in completo isolamento per mantenere attive le attrezzature sperimentali e condurre studi di glaciologia, chimica e fisica dell’atmosfera, astrofisica, astronomia, geofisica e biomedicina”, spiega Fabio Trincardi, direttore del Dipartimento di scienze del sistema terra e tecnologie per l’ambiente del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Dta-Cnr).
La Campagna estiva è iniziata lo scorso ottobre coinvolgendo diversi team di studio che, sfidando difficili condizioni ambientali e avvalendosi della collaborazione delle Forze Armate, hanno lavorato per la realizzazione di oltre 50 progetti di ricerca su ecosistemi e clima. I dati raccolti in Antartide saranno elaborati nei prossimi mesi presso i laboratori italiani che hanno preso parte ai progetti.
