Il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche è presente con la base Dirigibile Italia nell’Artico, luogo fragile e cruciale per lo studio dei processi legati al cambiamento climatico. Ecco due risultati della ricerca su questi importanti e complessi aspetti che danno conferma e in qualche modo quantificano il riscaldamento dell’acqua e dell’aria e lo scioglimento del permafrost, lo strato di terreno perennemente ghiacciato
Il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) è presente con proprie stazioni e attività di ricerca in entrambi i poli terrestri. In particolare, nel Circolo Polare Artico, gestisce la base Dirigibile Italia.
L’Artico, un luogo fragile e cruciale per la Terra, si sta riscaldando in modo molto maggiore di quanto avvenga nel resto del pianeta. In tale regione molti processi legati al cambiamento climatico possono essere amplificati. Ad esempio, il ritiro dei ghiacci causato dal riscaldamento causa ulteriore riscaldamento perché riduce l’albedo (la capacità delle superfici “bianche” di riflettere la radiazione solare), il riscaldamento della colonna d’acqua in assenza di ghiaccio estivo porta allo scioglimento del fondale marino perennemente ghiacciato (permafrost), con la possibilità che il metano intrappolato nei fondali marini possa essere ceduto all’atmosfera, conseguente aumento di concentrazione di questo gas serra e ulteriore riscaldamento del pianeta.
“La ricerca scientifica italiana in Artico contribuisce agli studi internazionali e interdisciplinari per aumentare la conoscenza dei cambiamenti climatici”, afferma il presidente del Cnr Inguscio. “Il fine è informare i policy maker, la comunità scientifica, le organizzazioni internazionali, le singole persone e, al tempo stesso, collaborare a mitigarne gli impatti e consentire una gestione sostenibile degli ecosistemi naturali e dell’attività umana nella regione”.
Allo stato attuale, l’attività del Cnr nella Stazione artica si esplica attraverso oltre 20 progetti di ricerca, concernenti fisica dell’atmosfera, oceanografia e biologia marina, geologia e geofisica, indagini sugli ecosistemi e sul paleoclima. Ecco due risultati della ricerca su questi complessi e cruciali aspetti:
Il sito osservativo integrato CNR alle Svalbard dimostra che il riscaldamento in Artico è maggiore di quello globale
Un ancoraggio (mooring) posizionato dal CNR nel Kongsfjorden alle Isole Svalbard misura il riscaldamento delle acque e la stagionalità del ghiaccio marino da sette anni. I dati offerti dall’ancoraggio permettono di misurare temperatura, salinità e altri parametri su tutta la colonna d’acqua per un centinaio di metri di profondità. I dati sono confrontati con quelli della Amundsen-Nobile Climate Change Tower, la torre con cui da dieci anni il CNR monitora l’atmosfera, sempre alle Svalbard. I dati integrati mare/aria dell’ancoraggio nel fiordo e della torre documentano in Artico un indubitabile aumento delle temperature. L’aumento della temperatura di aria e acqua ha anche un ulteriore inequivocabile impatto sulla velocità di scioglimento dei ghiacciai e sui flussi di “particellato”, il materiale solido che questi portano nel fiordo.
“Dai risultati, in corso di pubblicazione su una rivista scientifica, è molto chiara la progressiva ‘atlantificazione’ del fiordo con un incremento della temperatura dell’acqua intermedia di 4.3 °C/decade”, spiega Leonardo Langone dell’Istituto di scienze marine del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Ismar-Cnr). Sul fondo, il tasso di aumento della temperatura è minore ma sempre rilevante (1.6 °C/decade). Con la temperatura cresce anche la salinità (con un tasso di 0.7 unità per decade) e questo può portare a cambiamenti nella struttura della colonna d’acqua. L’aumento di temperatura dell’aria alla Climate Change Tower è stimato in 3.0 °C per decade, nettamente al di sopra della crescita media della temperatura mondiale, e in Artico in generale”.
In sintesi: la temperatura media in Artico cresce più velocemente che nel resto del pianeta e nei fiordi essa cresce più velocemente che nel resto dell’Artico. “La velocità di riscaldamento dell’acqua è maggiore perché nei fiordi entra più acqua atlantica, con ripercussioni sulla diminuzione del ghiaccio marino (in alcuni anni, addirittura, i fiordi durante l’inverno non si ghiacciano più), sul tipo di alghe e, quindi, sulla catena trofica e, più in generale, sull’intero ecosistema dei fiordi”, prosegue Langone. “Tutte le stagioni registrano un cambiamento ma è l’inverno che sta registrando il riscaldamento più rapido”.
Il Kongsfjorden alle Svalbard rappresenta un laboratorio naturale per lo studio dei cambiamenti climatici nei fiordi artici. I fiordi sono un elemento molto comune del sistema artico, solo la Norvegia ne conta più di mille. Quello che capiamo qui può essere applicato ad altri contesti analoghi, come per esempio in Groenlandia e nel Nord America.
Il permafrost dell’Artico libera gas serra in atmosfera e accelera il riscaldamento globale
Un lavoro condotto in collaborazione tra il CNR e l’Università di Stoccolma, recentemente pubblicato sulla prestigiosa rivista Nature Communications, riguarda lo scioglimento del permafrost siberiano.
Il permafrost terrestre contiene circa 1.500 miliardi di tonnellate di carbonio organico, essenzialmente resti di biomassa vegetale. Lo scioglimento del permafrost causa pertanto la riattivazione di questa biomassa che determina per via batterica la produzione di gas serra come metano e anidride carbonica (CO2). Le paure legate a tale fenomeno nascono da due aspetti centrali: la quantità di carbonio organico presente nel permafrost, oltre due volte superiore al contenuto di carbonio presente in atmosfera prima della rivoluzione industriale; l’amplificazione polare, in quanto i tassi di riscaldamento in Artico sono già superiori rispetto alle medie e basse latitudini. Questi due elementi fanno del permafrost un potenziale feedback positivo al riscaldamento climatico: si stima che alla fine del 2100, il rilascio dei gas serra da parte del permafrost potrà raggiungere il 25% del corrispondente rilascio legato all’uso dei combustibili fossili: un 25% in più “gratuito” senza soddisfare un vero fabbisogno energetico.
“Le stime di rilascio/degradazione hanno però delle grandi incertezze intrinseche legate ai limiti della nostra conoscenza del sistema artico. Proprio per questo, nonostante il permafrost venga definito il ‘gigante dormiente del cambiamento climatico’, i modelli previsionali dell’ultimo report IPCC non lo hanno ancora incluso tra i vari feedback climatici”, spiega Tommaso Tesi dell’Ismar-Cnr. “Lo studio pubblicato su Nature Communications si concentra sul permafrost scaricato in mare dai fiumi artici. Precedenti studi hanno evidenziato come le concentrazioni di carbonio organico proveniente dalla mobilizzazione del permafrost, lungo le piattaforme artiche, diminuiscano progressivamente seguendo il trasporto delle correnti. Mentre esiste largo consenso riguardo al fatto che questa diminuzione sia legata a una degradazione batterica, con produzione di gas serra, meno chiaro è il tasso con cui il permafrost viene degradato”.
Attraverso datazioni mirate realizzate mediante una tecnica innovativa che utilizza radiocarbonio su molecole organiche, è stato possibile ‘cronometrare’ il trasporto del permafrost lungo la piattaforma centro-siberiana. “Con sorpresa è emerso che il permafrost rilasciato dal Lena, il secondo fiume artico per bacino di drenaggio, e trasportato lungo il margine siberiano ha un tempo di residenza centenario-millenario sulla piattaforma. Questo implica che la degradazione e il conseguente rilascio di gas serra da parte dei sedimenti sono processi relativamente lenti”, conclude Tesi.
Se da una parte questa è una ‘buona notizia’, in quanto l’impatto rilasciato in mare è in parte mitigato nel breve periodo, dall’altra lo scioglimento e la degradazione del permafrost in oceano avrà comunque un impatto costante e continuato, anche se ridotto, per i prossimi secoli.
