Chiusa il 2 febbraio la stazione italiana Mario Zucchelli, il gruppo più numeroso di ricercatori e tecnici è arrivato in Italia il 12 febbraio con un volo dalla Nuova Zelanda, raggiunta con la nave rompighiaccio italiana “Laura Bassi”, di rientro da una ridotta campagna oceanografica nel mare di Ross, portata avanti dall’Università Parthenope di Napoli per l’Osservatorio MORSea.
La spedizione, organizzata quest’anno in modalità emergenza per far fronte alle limitazioni imposte dalle norme anti Covid, ha coinvolto un numero notevolmente inferiore di partecipanti rispetto al passato, per un totale di 72persone: 15 ricercatori e 57 addetti alla logistica, tra cui 11 specialisti delle Forze Armate Italiane e 1 dei Vigili del Fuoco.
Nonostante le limitazioni, sono state condotte attività di manutenzione e ricerca nell’ambito di31 progetti scientifici, tra cui quelle previste per 13 Osservatori riguardanti le scienze della vita, della Terra, dell’atmosfera e dello spazio. Manterranno attive le attrezzature sperimentali e continueranno i lavori di ricerca dei programmi antartici francese e italiano, relativi agli studi di glaciologia, chimica e fisica dell’atmosfera, astrofisica, astronomia e geofisica. Proseguiranno anche gli studi sull’adattamento umano in ambiente estremo, come previsti dai progetti della European Space Agency (ESA).
Per limitare qualsiasi rischio di diffusione del Covid in Antartide, il personale è stato sottoposto a un obbligo di 14 giorni di quarantena e all’esecuzione di diversi tamponi di controllo a Christchurch (Nuova Zelanda), prima di partire alla volta della stazione “Mario Zucchelli”, con un volo del programma antartico americano (USAP).
