Il 9 novembre si è conclusa con successo una delle prime operazioni logistiche svolte a Concordia dal gruppo degli spedizionieri estivi. L’apertura, il controllo e la manutenzione delle due Snow-Cave, le gallerie costruite sotto il ghiaccio, la cui costruzione e sperimentazione è iniziata durante la 34a spedizione. L’idea è quella di utilizzarle per il ricovero di attrezzature durante l’inverno antartico e di proporle come luogo per conservare nel tempo i campioni di ghiaccio.
La prima ad essere aperta è stata la Snow-Cave sperimentale, costruita per valutarne la stabilità e la durata nel tempo. Vi sono infatti installati i sensori che consentono di monitorarne la deformazione e le variazioni di temperatura, e vi si effettuano mini carotaggi per valutare la variazione della densità del ghiaccio.
La seconda snow-cave, invece, è un garage sotterraneo lungo 35m con un diametro della volta di 5m, che è utilizzato per il ricovero durante l’inverno antartico di attrezzature e mezzi di trasporto. L’apertura, riuscita senza problemi, ha permesso di riportare alla luce il materiale confinato a febbraio, prima della partenza degli ultimi partecipanti della campagna estiva e dell’inizio del lungo winter over. Il materiale è stato trovato in ottime condizioni in quanto non è stato esposto agli eventi metereologici estremi che caratterizzano l’area. La temperatura all’interno delle snow-cave si è mantenuta stabile intorno ai -55°C contro i -80 dell’esterno. Inoltre, all’apertura, le attrezzature sono apparse non ricoperte di ghiaccio perché protette dalle tempeste di neve e dai forti venti che possono soffiare fino a 200 km/h.
L’ottima stabilità strutturale che si sta riscontrando, associata al basso costo di realizzazione e al ridottissimo impatto ambientale, hanno eletto queste strutture a diventare il luogo dove conservare nel tempo anche i campioni di ghiaccio. Tra i progetti che ne beneficeranno, oltre a Beyond EPICA, il progetto ICE-MEMORY che si pone l’obiettivo di creare a Concordia un archivio mondiale delle carote prelevate dai ghiacciai in pericolo a causa dei cambiamenti climatici. Questo archivio permetterà di poter consegnare alle future generazioni preziose informazioni che altrimenti andrebbero perse.
