Smantellata nel 2017 la nave Italica, nel maggio 2019, l’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale ha acquistato per 12 milioni di euro, la nave “Ernest Shackleton” della compagnia di navigazione norvegese Rieber Shipping, grazie a un finanziamento ricevuto dal Ministero dell’istruzione, dell’università e della ricerca.
