Per la prima volta nella storia del PNRA, quest’anno la campagna antartica italiana continuerà fino a fine marzo. Le attività proseguono a bordo della nave Laura Bassi, impegnata in una campagna oceanografica nel mare di Ross.
La nave rompighiaccio Laura bassi, di proprietà dell’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) e unica imbarcazione italiana in grado di operare in mari polari, ha lasciato il 20 febbraio il porto di Lyttelton in Nuova Zelanda per compiere la sua terza rotazione in Antartide, come previsto nel programma della 37° spedizione del PNRA 2021-2022.
Nelle prime due rotazioni, la nave è stata utilizzata per trasferire personale e materiali dalla Nuova Zelanda alla stazione Mario Zucchelli e viceversa. E lungo il viaggio ha fatto tappe intermedie per svolgere attività di ricerca scientifica nel mare di Ross, dedicate all’osservatorio marino Morsea e ai progetti Amors, Giava, Isobata, Lasagne, Rosskrill e Signature, e per svolgere le attività di ricerca dell’Istituto Idrografico della Marina Militare Italiana.
Invece, durante questa terza rotazione, iniziata il 20 febbraio con la partenza dal porto di Littletown, in Nuova Zelanda, la nave non passerà nei pressi della stazione Mario Zucchelli, ormai chiusa dall’11 febbraio, ma navigherà nel mare di Ross con a bordo 21 persone, tra tecnici e ricercatori, che svolgeranno attività di ricerca dedicata prevalentemente alla geologia e geofisica marina.
Oltre all’equipaggio, a bordo della Laura Bassi è presente il personale logistico dell’ENEA, i tecnici e i ricercatori dell’OGS, dell’Università degli Studi di Trieste, del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche di Bologna e uno studente dell’Università di Otago (Nuova Zelanda), tutti impegnati a portare avanti i progetti COLLAPS, DISGELI, GRETA e ISOBATA. Sono salite a bordo anche due ricercatrici colombiane, ospiti del PNRA, che raccoglieranno dati sulla distribuzione dei mammiferi marini e sulla loro capacità di adeguarsi ai disturbi causati dall’attività antropica, come ad esempio in questo caso quelli causati dalle attività di ricerca geofisica. La nave resterà nel mare di Ross per 15 giorni, poi inizierà il lungo viaggio di ritorno verso l’Italia, il cui arrivo è previsto a inizio maggio 2022, dopo circa 45 giorni di navigazione.
Grazie al PNRA, lo scorso anno la nave è stata dotata di strumentazione scientifica all’avanguardia che sarà utilizzata durante questa campagna per effettuare una mappatura dettagliata del fondo del mare, acquisire profili di sismica a riflessione e raccogliere carote di sedimento in una zona generalmente coperta dai ghiacci polari. Saranno anche effettuate misure di salinità, temperatura, direzione e velocità delle correnti oceaniche. L’obiettivo è raccogliere i dati che aiuteranno a comprendere l’evoluzione della calotta polare in risposta ai cambiamenti climatici.
Ricordiamo che, per evitare il diffondersi della pandemia da SARS-Cov-2, anche a bordo della Laura Bassi è stato applicato lo stringente protocollo sanitario anti Covid-19, messo a punto lo scorso anno dal Consiglio dei direttori dei programmi nazionali antartici (COMNAP). Come tutto il personale in partenza per la campagna antartica del PNRA, anche il personale imbarcato sulla Laura Bassi è stato invitato a completare il ciclo di vaccinazione COVID-19 e a vaccinarsi contro l’influenza stagionale e lo pneumococco. Tutti sono stati sottoposti a rigorosi controlli sanitari sia prima della partenza dall’Italia, sia all’arrivo nel gateway antartico neozelandese.
