Da oggi è possibile seguire in tempo reale la campagna oceanografica della 36° spedizione italiana in Antartide.
E’ infatti on-line l’applicazione web MYWAY AT HOME che permette di visualizzare la mappa con il percorso, lo stato dei ghiacci e i principali parametri di navigazione della nave rompighiaccio italiana Laura Bassi, impegnata nella campagna oceanografica 2020-2021, prevista nell’ambito della 36° spedizione italiana in Antartide, organizzata dal Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA), finanziata dal Ministero dell’Università e Ricerca (MUR) e gestita da ENEA e CNR.
MAH è di fatto una fedele replica del sistema di navigazione MyWay presente a bordo della nave, impiegato a supporto delle attività logistiche e scientifiche. Il sistema, che consente di seguire in diretta la campagna oceanografica della nave come se si fosse a bordo, è stato completamente progettato e sviluppato dal Dott. Stefano Ferriani dell’ENEA impiegando esclusivamente software open-source.
La nave rompighiaccio da ricerca “Laura Bassi” è dal 2019 di proprietà dell’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale. Ma grazie a un accordo tra i principali Enti nazionali che studiano le aree polari e ne gestiscono le infrastrutture, la nave Laura Bassi dà supporto a tutta la comunità scientifica italiana impegnata in Artide e in Antartide.

Quest’anno, l’attuale emergenza sanitaria ha imposto delle forti limitazioni alle attività in Antartide. La 36° spedizione italiana, attualmente in corso, è stata infatti organizzata in modalità “emergenza”, caratterizzata sia da una riduzione del personale al minimo indispensabile, sia da una riduzione delle attività scientifiche e logistiche previste. Anche la campagna oceanografica ha subito limitazioni, e la Laura Bassi, salpata il 24 dicembre 2020 ore 8.00 italiane dal porto di Lyttelton in Nuova Zelanda, alla volta della stazione Mario Zucchelli, sarà impiegata principalmente in operazioni di manutenzione della strumentazione dell’Osservatorio Marino del PNRA, oltre che per trasportare materiale da e per le stazioni italiane antartiche e per consentire al personale impegnato in campo di poter tornare a casa. Il rientro al porto di Lyttelton, che concluderà la 36a campagna antartica, è previsto per il 1° febbraio 2021.
Nel rispetto delle norme anti-Covid, dettate per mantenere l’Antartide unico continente Covid free, tutto il personale è stato imbarcato dopo che ha effettuato un periodo di quarantena di 15 giorni in Nuova Zelanda e sottoposto ai dovuti controlli. Al rientro, tutti i partecipanti rimarranno a bordo della nave fino al momento di essere trasferiti, attraverso un “corridoio” dedicato, all’aeroporto per l’imbarco sul volo di ritorno in Italia.
