2020/2021 – La XXXVI spedizione per l’unico continente “COVID free”
Purtroppo l’attuale emergenza sanitaria. causata dalla pandemia dovuta al virus SARS-COV-2, ha imposto alla spedizione forti limitazioni delle attività scientifiche e logistiche, con una riduzione del personale al minimo indispensabile per poter aprire e mantenere le stazioni in sicurezza e consentire la manutenzione della strumentazione scientifica.
Il volo del gruppo di apertura della Stazione Mario Zucchelli è stato assicurato, come sempre, dal programma antartico americano (USAP), con un volo da Christchurch (NZ) a McMurdo (Base americana), e da qui a Baia Terra Nova con due aerei più piccoli, un Basler (VKB) e un Twin Otter (KBO/KBG). A questo sono seguiti solo due voli passeggeri da Hobart (Australia), con Airbus-A319 dell’Australian Antarctic Division, che hanno portato il resto del personale, e un volo cargo da Christchurch (NZ), con la compagnia neozelandese RNZAF.

Il gruppo di apertura, oltre a riattivare i servizi dopo la chiusura del marzo scorso, ha preparato la pista di 3 km sul pack marino, idonea all’atterraggio dei successivi vettori aerei intercontinentali.
Al fine di mantenere l’Antartide unico continente COVID free, è stata stabilita una quarantena rigida di almeno 14 giorni per tutto il personale PNRA, che hanno effettuato a Hobart (Australia) e a Christchurch (NZ), prima di raggiungere le stazioni Mario Zucchelli e Concordia e la nave da ricerca Laura Bassi.
Le precauzioni imposte dall’emergenza sanitaria hanno infatti costretto ENEA a rimodulare la pianificazione del personale di spedizione nell’impossibilità di poter effettuare gli usuali corsi preparatori per il personale neofita. Il personale di spedizione, ad eccezione di quello invernante, è di conseguenza costituito da soli veterani. Per il personale neofita invernante è stata organizzata una formazione breve ad hoc in Italia, che è proseguita nel corso della lunga quarantena, con corsi a distanza a cura di ENEA e dell’Istituto polare francese IPEV.
Attualmente la campagna è ancora in corso.
La nave condurrà una brevissima campagna oceanografica, volta alla conservazione e alla manutenzione della strumentazione dell’Osservatorio Marino, a partire dal 24 dicembre quando salperà dal porto neozelandese di Lyttelton; fino ad arrivare a Baia Terra Nova da dove ripartirà il 24 gennaio con tutto il personale ancora rimasto presso la Stazione Mario Zucchelli. Il rientro del personale infatti, anticipato rispetto all’usuale, sarà effettuato esclusivamente con i mezzi navali del PNRA e dell’IPEV mediante le navi Laura Bassi e L’Astrolabe.
La campagna estiva durerà 3 mesi. Quest’anno, diversamente dagli altri anni e a causa della riduzione di personale, il periodo di sovrapposizione tra i 12 invernanti winter over entranti, (6 del PNRA, 5 dell’Istituto polare francese Paul Emile Victor (IPEV) e 1 medico dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA) e uscenti, sarà notevolmente prolungato. Data la ridotta durata della campagna estiva, il winter over inizierà a metà gennaio. Il personale invernante resterà poi in completo isolamento fino a novembre 2021, durante la stagione invernale, quando si toccano temperature esterne di -80°C (percepite fino a-100°C).
