Dal diario di angelo Galeandro, in missione a Concordia nell’inverno antartico 2021-2022, durante la 18a campagna invernale, il WINTEROVER DC18
Per far meglio comprendere cosa significa partecipare ad una spedizione in Antartide, condividiamo alcune pagine del diario personale di uno dei partecipanti. Un racconto ricco di eventi ed emozioni che mostra l’impegno e la passione di quanti, in nome della scienza, vivono e lavorano per un lungo anno sul plateau antartico.
Sono pagine tratte dal diario scritto da Angelo Galeandro, classe 1975, di Taranto, ingegnere ambientale specializzato in rilevamenti topografici e tecniche di monitoraggio di movimenti e deformazioni. Quella del 2021-2022 è la sua seconda missione in Antartide come “Winterover”. E’ partito da Roma a ottobre 2021 e ne farà ritorno a novembre 2022, dopo aver trascorso l’inverno antartico presso la stazione Concordia per seguire i progetti di Fisica dell’Atmosfera e le attività dell’Osservatorio Meteorologico.
Angelo Galeandro fa parte del gruppo composto da 13 persone, tra tecnici e ricercatori, che vivono e lavorano presso la stazione Concordia anche durante il gelido inverno australe, quando la stazione è completamente isolata e non più raggiungibile a causa delle proibitive condizioni meteorologiche che fanno scendere la temperatura anche sotto -80°C. Sono i Winterover. Arrivano a Concordia a novembre, insieme al gruppo che porterà avanti la campagna estiva e che lascerà la stazione nei primi giorni di febbraio. Da quel momento, i Winterover restano completamente isolati dal resto del mondo, a oltre 3.000 metri di altitudine sul plateau antartico e a più di 1.000 chilometri dalla costa. Per nove lunghi mesi manterranno in funzione la stazione e continueranno i lavori di ricerca dei programmi antartici francese e italiano, relativi agli studi di glaciologia, chimica e fisica dell’atmosfera, astrofisica, astronomia, geofisica e medicina.

Con il decollo dell’ultimo aereo, avvenuto il 7 febbraio 2022, è iniziato il vero winterover, Da quel momento per circa 9 mesi, 13 persone resteranno isolate sul plateau antartico potendo contare solo sulle proprie forse.
